7-Day Tanzania Birdwatching Tour

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Arusha

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Arusha. Optional: Afternoon birdwatching around the hotel gardens, where you might spot species like the Marabou Stork, African Fish Eagle, and Silvery-cheeked Hornbill. Accommodation: Arusha Coffee Lodge or similar.

Day 2: Arusha National Park

After breakfast, drive to Arusha National Park, a birdwatcher's paradise with over 400 species. Birdwatching highlights: African Crowned Eagle, Narina Trogon, Bar-tailed Trogon, and Hartlaub's Turaco. Explore the park’s diverse habitats, including montane forest and Momella Lakes, which are excellent for spotting flamingos and waterbirds. Return to Arusha in the evening. Accommodation: Arusha Coffee Lodge or similar.

Day 3: Lake Manyara National Park

Drive to Lake Manyara National Park, known for its diverse birdlife and groundwater forests. Birdwatching highlights: Lesser Flamingos, African Spoonbills, Pelicans, Grey-headed Kingfishers, and Crowned Hornbills. Explore the shores of Lake Manyara, home to thousands of pink flamingos and other waterfowl. Overnight stay at a nearby lodge. Accommodation: Lake Manyara Serena Lodge or similar.

Day 4: Tarangire National Park

Early morning departure to Tarangire National Park, home to over 500 bird species. Birdwatching highlights: Yellow-collared Lovebird, Ashy Starling (endemic to Tanzania), Kori Bustard, and the striking White-bellied Go-away-bird. The park is also rich in wildlife, including elephants and baobab trees, enhancing the birdwatching experience. Evening game drive followed by a relaxing dinner at the lodge. Accommodation: Tarangire Treetops or similar.

Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater

Head to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, which is home to a unique ecosystem with excellent birding opportunities. Birdwatching highlights: Rufous-tailed Weaver, Hildebrandt’s Starling, Augur Buzzard, and Verreaux’s Eagle. After a full day of birdwatching and wildlife viewing, return to your lodge on the crater rim. Accommodation: Ngorongoro Serena Lodge or similar.

Day 6: Serengeti National Park

Drive to the iconic Serengeti National Park, one of Africa’s best birdwatching and wildlife destinations. Birdwatching highlights: Secretary Bird, Lilac-breasted Roller, Fischer’s Lovebird, Grey-backed Fiscal, and various raptors. Game drives through the endless plains, where you can spot both birds and the abundant wildlife, including the famous Big Five. Optional: Evening sundowner with a chance to observe nocturnal bird species. Accommodation: Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge or similar.

Day 7: Serengeti to Arusha – Departure

Enjoy an early morning birdwatching session in the Serengeti before your transfer to the airstrip for a domestic flight back to Arusha. Optional: Last-minute birdwatching around Arusha before departure. Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flight.
